How-To-Easily-Remove--Powered-by-WordPress

Remove Powered by WordPress in 3 Easy Steps

Looking for ways to remove powered by WordPress from your blog? Whoever said setting up a blog/site is easy never had to do it alone. While the process of installing WordPress and picking a theme is pretty straightforward, there are tens of minor (and often tedious) tasks you’ll have to check off your to-do list before taking your site live.

And the worst part? You probably won’t even think of them until you start to customize your little corner of the Internet. Removing “powered by WordPress” from your footer is a prime example of such a dreary task. Not to worry, though – we have some useful and easy to follow advice that will rid you of this problem in a jiffy. Read on.

Although Google advises against linking externally in the footer, certain WordPress themes incorporate the infamous “powered by WordPress” link by default – including Twenty Fourteen, Twenty Thirteen, and Twenty Twelve.

All these popular themes come equipped with the link in the footer, so you have two options: either live with it once your theme is live or follow our quick tutorial to remove it.

Here’s a video on how to do it with a step-by-step walkthrough – external link, opens up in a new tab.

Yes, removing the link is officially frowned upon by WordPress, but there are two methods that do the trick:

  • Using the Style.css file to cover up the footer message
  • Using the Footer.php file to remove the footer from your site

Easiest way – Remove Footer Credit Plugin (Download link)

Remove or replace the footer credits or any text or HTML in the page before it is rendered without modifying code. Many WordPress “experts” recommend modifying code (such as the footer.php). Modifying code is a bad idea because if you don’t know what you’re doing (or even if you do) you can seriously break your site. Also, whenever you update your WP theme it will stomp over your changes and require you do make the modifications all over again.

With this plugin you can easily modify your footer credits with no coding necessary. This plugin is very minimal to keep things simple and easy to use. There are just two text boxes: one to enter text/HTML to find and another to enter text/HTML to replace with (or nothing to remove). How to Remove Powered by WordPress

  1. Login to your WordPress dashboard as an Admin
  2. Scroll over ‘Appearance’ and then click on the ‘Editor’ menu
  3. Click on the Style.css file; it’s at the near-bottom of the Templates section
  4. Type the following code at the end of the Style.css file and click the ‘Update File’ button

You can now preview your site and be jolly – you’ve successfully managed to hide the “powered by WordPress” message!

How to Completely Remove Powered By WordPress from the Footer

The method mentioned above will only serve to hide the footer message from your site. However, it will not completely remove the link; the original message will always be shown in your Template PHP file.

Therefore, in order to permanently get rid of it, you need to edit the “Footer.php” file and remove a code sequence. Don’t worry, it’s easier than it sounds. You simply need to delete a few lines of code. The example below was provided using the Twenty Fourteen theme.

Voilà! You can now preview your site in a browser to see that the footer message has completely disappeared.

Adding a Custom Footer Message

If you want to replace the WordPress footer message with a customized message like “Copyright @ Macho Themes,” modify the footer code as shown below:

  1. I’m using “Remove Footer credits” plugin to remove my footer links. But after reading this post, it is really simple to remove those links. Thanks for this useful post.

  2. This is the best one solution from all of those that I have found on internet. Thanks for sharing and making me able to remove wordpress powered by text.

  3. Hey just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your post seem to be running off the screen in Firefox. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know. The layout look great though! Hope you get the issue fixed soon. Thanks|

  4. I’m also using the Hestia theme and having the same issue as a few people here. I usually know how to remove the footer credits as explained in this post, however, with this theme the code isn’t the same which confuses me.

  5. you can simply remove it by going to appearence>editor>CTR+f and fine footer.php>where you can again use Ctr+f to find what you want to remove or replace from footer

  6. The Baggies theme authors are clever. they modified the code to an extent that it took me 2 hours to figure out where they placed the footer “powered by” text. 1-null for baggies. Usually its an easy task.

  7. Just a note for the Hestia users. Appearance>Customize>Additional CSS. Add in this line of code:

    .copyright.pull-right {
    display: none;
    }

  8. None of these options work now in the Atahualpa theme. I have tried everything to get rid of it. I haven’t had any problems customizing the footer until the latest update.

    • Hi Terence,

I’ve just tested this with Total theme by Hash Themes & Remove Footer Credit worked flawlessly.

Could you please send a screenshot of the settings you’re using for the plugin?

      Thanks,
      Cristian.

  11. Hello
I just installed your plug in and am unsure how to use it!

    I’m using Envo Business theme

  12. Hi,

I tried the plugin but no luck. Using Fluida theme. The powered by Fluida & WordPress is not in the footer.php. I’ve read some comments and even though its released under a GPL license they won’t give up the “secret” to remove the footer credits.

    Thank you!

    Mark

    • Hello Mark,

You can replace that text easily using our plugin.
There is no need to edit the any theme files.
You just have to go to your website > right click on it and select ‘View page source’ > search there for the text/html you want to remove and then copy it > and paste it in your dashboard > Tools > Remove footer credit > Step 1 > inside the field for step 2 enter your replacement for that text/html.

Here is an example for the Fluida theme, which I tested beforehand: https://gyazo.com/00b041aca063b4aba87ffd15b69959b0

Please give this a try and let me know how it goes!

      All the best,
      Mihaela

  13. Does this work if you’re running multiple themes? It’s removing the footer link from one of my themes perfectly, but I can’t seem to find the correct line of coding to remove the other one…

    • Hao – could you please describe your situation in a bit more detail? I’m not sure I can follow. How are you exactly using multiple themes at the same time?

      Thanks,
      Cristian.

  14. Thank you for making the plug-in!

I was able to get the plugin to replace the text, but the link to wordpress.org still remains on my replacement text. I was wondering if you had any suggestions/tips on how to remove that link.

        • That worked great, thank you! :)

I have another site that I’m using the ColorMag theme on, and it doesn’t seem to be allowing me to change any of the footer credit text with the plugin.

I’d love to hear if you have any tips on how to get it to work.
